PALM BEACH ESTATE FIND!! Set of Four Exotic Botanical Engraving Prints after Johannes Nieuhof. All are framed and triple matted. Measure 30” wide and 19” tall overall and 16” x 10” within the matte. Although sturdy and well made, some of the frames are in fair condition with scratches and light gouges, but a little TLC and they would look great as they already have an antiqued, weathered look to them. Additionally, one has a strange “haze” on the glass interior (shown) and may need to be opened, wiped down and resealed. They display well regardless.
These were purchased from a multi-million dollar home in Mirasol estates.
We believe this depiction of tropical fruits and trees is from a 1668 account by the Dutch traveller Johan Nieuhof (1618-1672) of his travels in China and south-eastern Asia. Nieuhof travelled in Brazil in the 1640s and China in the 1650s, and then worked for the Dutch East India Company in the 1660s. Many translations were published of his accounts of his travels in Brazil, India and China. We believe these are reproduced from 'Legatio batavica' (1668).
We have tried to do some research and believe these may be the same set of prints sold by an Australian antique print store, who called them engravings. Since we have not removed them from the frames to inspect, we are selling them as decorative, reproduction prints and do not guarantee their age or authenticity.
